Favor: Post 3 (of 5)

LEAP OF FAITH. “Either we sell the house, or Sarah gets a job. We can’t move to Pittsburgh until then.” Of course we couldn’t move ‘until then.’ It was the only way ends would possibly meet. It made practical sense, so we dedicated time to trying to sell or rent the house and hunt for work. But after a couple months, neither the house sold or rented and my wife, Sarah, had yet to get a call for potential employment. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the moment, on my way to the ‘Burgh to look at potential apartments for us, when God clearly spoke to me that he had called us to Pittsburgh and we needed to be *IN* Pittsburgh. I immediately called my wife from the car and said, “I think I’m going to find our new home today, and that we need to move as soon as possible; are you okay with me signing a lease even (more…)

Favor: Post 2 (of 5)

This post is part of a series celebrating some of the incredible ways God has shown his favor in planting The Bridge. You can read the first post here. “Family Fun Day” was the high-water mark of our summer ministry season in 2010. If you read yesterday’s post, you saw some of the cool ways God made a way where there was no way in securing a location at the right time. But one of the most exciting aspects of the day was seeing how churches from across our district partnered together to see incredible things take place. Here’s an excerpt from an article I wrote earlier about the day: …during The Bridge’s summer outreach event, a free “Family Fun Day,” held at the end of August when ten of the District’s 28 churches helped provide over 100 volunteers, funding, food, and other supplies which made the day a great success. Favor: Post 1 (of 5)

The Bridge is having a Grand Opening Celebration this weekend (it’s our ‘official launch’ for those of you who prefer church-planty lingo) and we are incredibly excited. It’s hard to believe the day will actually be here — especially when you stop to consider that a year ago neither the Coxes nor the Gomezes had yet become residents of Pittsburgh and our Launch Team could have been described as ‘embryonic’ at best! In preparation for and celebration of this weekend, I am making it a point to share some of the ways we have seen God’s favor in the adventure of launching The Bridge. So, I’ll be posting one example of this each day from now to Sunday. Here’s today’s: The Park At the end of August, The Bridge was hosting a “Family Fun Day” as a way to connect with the community. The Rest of January

The rest of this month is going to be pretty busy as we prepare for our official launch/”Grand Opening” of The Bridge and spend time serving our community. We will be hosting preview services, topping-off washer fluid for motorists at local gas stations, hosting a blanket giveaway, and, of course, launching! In between we’ll be canvassing neighborhoods, inviting friends and neighbors, sending out postcards, and doing whatever else we can to get the word out to the community. We have seen the Holy Spirit go before us in amazing ways, and in the next post, I’ll share some of the highlights of how he’s shown us his favor (it’s probably going to leave you speechless). In the meantime, we are asking you to keep the following events as points of serious prayer throughout the month: Saturday, January 15 — Washer Fluid Top-Off (Exxon @ 7409 Saltsburg Rd, Penn Hills — click for map) from 10 am – 1 pm Sunday, January (more…)

FunDay Follow-Up

We had a great day yesterday at The Bridge’s (free!) Family Fun Day. We had a steady stream of attendance (an average of just over 100 people an hour from the community) and over 120 volunteers from our own launch team and other District churches who helped make the day an amazing success. Here are the ways God answered your prayers for the day: We asked you to pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit and we definitely sensed we were operating in God’s strength and by his favor. We asked you to pray for safety and security and we had no serious incidents; we were able to leave the park in better shape than we found it. There was one medical need that occurred immediately following the arrival of area medics who wanted to check in–the timing was amazing as God provided the right people at the (more…)

Pre-Fun Day PrayerNote

I sent a PrayerNote to our committed prayer partners earlier this morning asking them to take time to pray for our Family Fun Day tomorrow; I’m posting it here in hopes that as you read it, you would also pray for us and the event. Things for tomorrow are shaping up nicely and we’ve been overwhelmed at the response of the community thus far (not to mention the 100+ people who have committed to join us as volunteers!). Here’s the Note: We know…that a great event without the activity of God’s Spirit is just a fleeting moment; with God’s hand at work and his response to your prayers, tomorrow can be more than the opportunity for good publicity for The Bridge–it can be the day eternities are changed as people meet Jesus. To that end, we’d ask you to pray as you think of us today and tomorrow for… …the anointing of the Holy Spirit on our volunteers, leaders, and (more…)

My Prayer for this Week

As we prepare for our free Family Fun Day (this Saturday!), I have found myself laboring in prayer on behalf of the people who will be in attendance. My prayer for the week/weekend has been something like this: Father Dear, I know your Spirit is working even now drawing hearts and lives to you. Thank you for your incredible faithfulness and love–without you we have no hope. As we do our part of ‘meeting you halfway’ for Family Fun Day and preparing for our PreView service, help us to remain faithful and focused on sharing your love and hope with those around us; give us eyes like yours and courage to speak, act, and love when prompted. God, we have asked you for twenty people to come to know you this Summer as a result of your interaction with them through The Bridge–help us to be a vessel you can use this weekend and as we make connections; would you (more…)

CPAC, Day One

<Image courtesy of Clearly Ambiguous> Today was a great ‘introduction’ day—the three couples here for Assessment got a chance to get to know each other, and we were given a glimpse of the process involved in CPAC before jumping in headlong. Before we go any further, though, it’s worth noting that it was communicated time and time again that this process is much more about discovering who God has created us to be and to find the best ministry fit than it is about any kind of pass-or-fail scenario. The advice given to us: have fun and enjoy the incredible gift of having three days full of people taking the time to help us understand who we are and how God may be leading us. Sounds like very wise advice to me. We began with each potential planter delivering two messages: five minutes to a ‘room of unchurched people’ on why they should consider Jesus, and five minutes attempting to (more…)

My Prayer for Today…

Lately at the beginning of (and often throughout) each day, I’ve been praying something like this: God, make me a fool so You can shame the wise. Father, please make me weak, so as to shame the strong. Make me lowly and despised, as we watch You shine above the created order. Help me to boast only in You—because You and Your righteousness are the only good in me; may I be mindful of who I was when You called me: unwise, influencing nothing, and of humble birth. All I have and all I am is in You. Through me and my life, please proclaim the crucifixion and make known Your great love, power, and righteousness. Thank You for making me Yours. Now, I just hope I have courage and steadfastness as it is answered.
