“Do not neglect your gift…

1 Timothy 4:14

Have you ever driven past an old building and felt the kind of sadness which comes when you see within the broken down shell of what-used-to-be a glimmer of the beauty which once was?

Not far from where I grew up is ‘The Boneyard.’ Driving past it, I always got the same kind of sadness: engineering masterpieces, the marvel of aviation, splayed out in the open for all to see–some as evidence of compliance with a Cold War agreement promising materiel drawdown. Shells of planes were left out in the oven of the Arizona desert to bake away the last vestiges of their purpose.

There’s an old recipe for rabbit stew that begins, “First, catch the rabbit…” Though it may seem a bit obvious, at least the writer of the recipe understood the importance of keeping first things first; and when it comes to exercising faith, it’s important to make sure first things really are first in our own hearts.

Answer & Rescue

This is what the LORD says: “In the time of my favor, I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will rescue you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and reassign its desolate inheritances, to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!'” Isaiah 49:8-9a

You and I have the awesome privilege of living together in the time of God’s favor. How do I know? Because rescue has come through Jesus and we have received the Holy Spirit. We live in the midst of what countless generations yearned for!
